Exterior Lighting Upgrade Process

These lighting upgrades can be more difficult from a technical perspective the interior retrofits. There are important steps that should be followed to reduce problems and improve your chances of success. We recommend the following at a minimum:

1. Thoroughly review and finalize your requirements with the assistance of a lighting professional and make certain that you have buy in from your design/construction department, maintenance, energy management and property management groups. Get detailed surveys done of representative sites and develop the scope and cost for these locations.

2. Review local regulations regarding dark skies, light pollution etc. Also get

permission from property owners if the space is leased.

3. Allow lead times for materials and permits.

4. Choose a location as a pathfinder installation and take before and after readings/photos and validate that the desired results are achieved. If not, revise your strategy and test the new assumptions before proceeding with the rollout.
      5. Have facilities maintenance carefully examine the completed project from a life cycle cost standpoint. Can fixtures/systems be maintained easily? Do they have daylight sensors or are they tied to the EMS? Are people at the facility satisfied?
