Getting started developing your program

To get started, review the FAQ section, then take a big breath and get ready for and interesting and rewarding journey. If your answers to the FAQ have you believing that a retrofit is right for you, one of the best first steps is to involve vendor partners to help you manage the process. By involving vendor partners (manufactures, energy professionals and contractors) you will get the diversified expertise you need to build a sound plan of action that can be reviewed and molded by constituents within your company. As a part of this first step, key savings opportunities can be identified and assessed and you can begin to discuss these ideas and strategies and involve senior management in the process.

It is important that KEY players within your company get involved early in the process and buy in to the program. Failure to do so may cause you to have “false starts” due to the failure to incorporate critical business concerns into your plan. Key internal constituents are:

President – Must understand the financials and how it affects the bottom line.

CFO – Must make sure that the financials fit with the corporate business plan. Understand options of financing vs. using capital and balance sheet ramifications.

Facilities Engineering & Risk Management – Must understand the life cycle cost and maintenance issues as well as compliance with existing and new regulations. Must ensure the new lighting system is consistent with current and future construction guidelines.

Marketing/Merchandising – How does it affect visual aspects of product presentation?

Energy Managers – Impacts to future energy costs.

Property Management/Real Estate – Impact to leases or property plans will impact potential program rollout.
